1. Log Selection and Preparation
The process begins with selecting suitable logs, typically hardwood or softwood species like birch, pine, or maple. The logs are debarked and cut into manageable lengths before being softened in hot water or steam to make peeling easier.
2. Veneer Peeling (Rotary Cutting)
The softened logs are placed on a rotary lathe, which spins them against a sharp blade, peeling off thin, continuous sheets of veneer. The thickness of the veneer depends on the intended plywood grade and use.
3. Veneer Drying
Freshly peeled veneers contain high moisture content, which must be reduced to prevent warping or mold. Industrial dryers use heat (gas or steam) to lower moisture levels to around 6-10%, making the veneers stable for gluing.
4. Veneer Cutting and Grading
The dried veneers are trimmed to standard sizes using clipping machines. They are then graded based on quality—higher grades for surface layers and lower grades for inner plies. Defective sections are removed or repaired.
5. Glue Application and Layering
Adhesive (usually urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde resin) is applied evenly using a glue spreader. The veneers are then stacked in alternating grain directions (cross-laminated) to enhance strength and stability.
6. Pressing (Cold and Hot Presses)
The layered veneers are first compressed in a cold press to set the glue. They then move to a hot press, where high temperature (140–160°C) and pressure (100–200 psi) activate the adhesive, bonding the plies into a solid panel.
7. Finishing (Sanding, Trimming, and Coating)
After pressing, the plywood panels are sanded to smooth the surfaces. They are then trimmed to final dimensions using saws. Optional finishing steps include laminating, painting, or applying protective coatings for enhanced durability.
