Quick lime, also known as calcium oxide (CaO), is produced through the calcination of limestone, which is primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).
The production process begins with the selection of high - quality limestone. The limestone is then crushed into smaller pieces using crushers to facilitate subsequent processing. These crushed stones are screened to achieve a uniform particle size, ensuring consistent calcination.
Next, the prepared limestone is fed into a lime kiln. There are several types of lime kilns, such as vertical shaft kilns and rotary kilns. In the kiln, the limestone is subjected to high temperatures, typically between 900°C and 1300°C. At these elevated temperatures, the calcium carbonate undergoes a thermal decomposition reaction, releasing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and leaving behind quick lime.
After calcination, the quick lime is discharged from the kiln. It is usually very hot and needs to be cooled. Cooling can be achieved through methods like air - cooling or water - cooling in some cases. Once cooled, the quick lime can be further processed, such as being crushed into different sizes or ground into a fine powder, depending on its intended applications in industries like construction, steel - making, and water treatment.
